Grapes and Walnut Raita

Raita is a side dish that is served with any kind of food to cool the palate in India. It is usually prepared by mixing yogurt with some vegetable or fruit. The most common type of raita that is served in restaurants are cucumber or tomato raita. Having made this too often I decided to try out something different. So, I ventured into replacing veggies with fruits and  tried  various combinations. In the end I found that grapes, especially when they are very sweet and crunchy tasted the best with yogurt. This recipe slowly evolved and I started adding nuts to it. Of all the nuts I used, walnut came out to be a clear winner. I have been making this raita more often and sometimes substituted other fruits to get a different taste. It is a simple raita but becomes delicious when it is served with the right kind of food. I served mine for dinner with mint rice, stuffed parata and spicy chili curry. If you are looking to wow your guest this easy and healthy raita might just do it.
